The typical rule-of-thumb is one gallon for about every three to four hundred square feet. However, some paint formulas and wall textures may require more specific amounts.

One gallon can of paint will cover up to 400 square feet, which is enough to cover a small room like a bathroom.

Two gallon cans of paint cover up to 800 square feet, which is enough to cover an average size room. This is the most common amount needed, especially when considering second coat coverage.

Three gallon cans of paint cover up to 1200 square feet. This is enough to cover a large room or a couple of average-sized rooms adjoining each other. You may want to consider this extra can if you are doing a room with vaulted ceilings.

Use the right tools
The right roller helps to provide the correct coverage needed, and better looking results. The typical size needed is a 9-inch roller with a 3/8-inch inch nap for smooth walls, or a 1/2-inch nap for textured walls.
To avoid leaving any visible roller lines, continue your final stroke all the way down the wall. Don't be afraid to be generous with the paint, you want to completely cover your wall, in order to avoid future touch-ups.
