For most of us, the summers of our childhood were simple, joyous times spent outdoors, where we whiled away the hours playing games of fancy and letting our imagination run free. Some of these memories include hanging face downwards from a tree, chasing our friends round the park, or taking turns pushing each other dangerously high on a swing! While those carefree days of childhood are firmly in the past now, we can certainly capture some of those intrinsic joys and simple pleasures in our homes for our children to enjoy.
One of the easiest ways to do that is by incorporating a swing in your home décor. Indoor swings are versatile, and can be right at home in your living room, bedroom or balcony. If you have garden or balcony space, then you can add a lovely outdoor swing as well; it doesn’t take up much space and can create hours of endless joy for your little ones!
Here are ten lovely ways to add a swing to your home. Let’s get swinging!
1. Macrame Chair
If you’re a macrame enthusiast, try your hand at this simple DIY hanging chair. All it takes is a round frame and strong string, some fairly easy knots and a little patience to create this lovely seat that would look good anywhere in your home. Pile it with comfy cushions, get hold of your favourite mushy romance and you have all you need to idle away a lazy afternoon!
2. Upcycled Swing
Here’s an unusual look for a discarded car tyre! This upcycled swing is as innovative and creative as they come, crafted out of two ropes and a spray-painted tyre. Note how the knots in the tyre swing ropes add strength as well as aesthetic appeal. We also absolutely love the bench seats made out of wooden pallets and the stacked crates converted to open shelves.
3. Indoor Hammock
One of the loveliest pleasures of life is a summer siesta. Especially one that’s enjoyed in a hammock, being lulled to sleep by the sound of the waves on the beach! If you’re living in a city, falling asleep to the sound of the waves may be a far-fetched dream, but getting a hammock is certainly doable. Set it up in a corner of the bedroom or in your living room, if indoors, and on your porch or deck if space permits and there’s enough of a view.
4. The Beauty of Tradition
Traditional jharokhas are intricate works of art and take hours of painstaking craftsmanship. Add grandeur to your ethnic home with an elaborate carved wooden swing, with delicate inlays and ornate carvings that are fit for modern royalty! The lovely traditional artwork on the wall and embroidered cushions with mirrorwork add to the ambience.
5. Loft Swing
Check out the cool oakwood swing that’s suspended from the loft beam in this delightful room for a teen. The couch and the sleeping area on the upper level match the blue cushions on the swing, tying the aesthetics of the room together.
6. Rocking Bed
Here’s a Bohemian-style swing large enough to double up as a bed! Shut out the world for awhile and get rocked to sleep in this one-of-a-kind swinging bed. The thick crocheted throw has oodles of old-fashioned charm.
7. Swinging in the Garden
Step up your conversation corner by adding a swing to one side of a seating area. This sunny porch is the perfect setting for a lovely wooden garden swing, paired with a rattan couch that completes the outdoors look. Pile high with coordinated cushions and settle down for an afternoon tete-a-tete.
8. Rattan Style

9. Swing Seat for the Lawn
This C-shaped swing seat had to make our list! Easily combining comfort and fun, this designer chair that’s fashioned out of sleek metal pipes and fitted with a soft padded mattress is a great value-add to your lawn. The umbrella attachment offers ample shade on a sunny afternoon.
10. Kiddie Swing Time!
Score some brownie points with your kids by getting them this little swing chair. Completely safe and secure (your little one will literally be strapped in with a safety harness), this cloth and rope swing is comfy enough for your toddler to even fall asleep in. Strap her in for fun meal times, and even the fussiest baby will be happy to swing away while eating her carrots!
11. Setting Up Your Indoor Swing
A swing that is not attached to a floor stand has to be hung from a ceiling beam or joist. Use a mounting plate and an expansion bolt that holds on to a solid ceiling joist, and suspend the swing securely from this plate. Make sure that all ropes and chains are well attached, and check to see if it will support twice the weight of an adult, to be on the safer side. The seat should be hung at around 18 to 24 inches from the ground.
While this is not a difficult task, if you are even a lit bit unsure of how to go about it, its best to call in a professional. You don’t want to come crashing down when you’re in the middle of your afternoon nap!
