What is Arch Design?

An arch is a classic architectural element that can add a touch of old-world charm to any building, be it as part of the façade or the interior. It may be hard to believe, but arches have been in use for over a thousand years in building construction. Originally they were used to support heavy spans in place of the concrete lintels or beams that are commonly used today. Awe-inspiring arches are found at the heart of many of the world’s greatest architectural monuments.

Arches can be designed in a multitude of circular, flat, corbelled and elliptical shapes. The graceful half-circle, however, continues to be one of the most popular forms in use. Designers use arches for many different reasons—to frame views, add drama or highlight a space. It could also be used to soften a space and make it look inviting and comfortable.

Let’s take a look at how this graceful and much-loved design element has shaped many modern interiors and found its way into kitchen decor today.

Tuscan Beauty

This warm kitchen is framed with a series of graceful arches that are created using sun-baked exposed bricks. All you need is a thin crust pizza and a cup of gelato, and you’ve captured the essence of the Mediterranean.

Perfectly Proportioned

This lovely semi-circular arch above the open shelving unit breaks the monotony of the plain minimalistic interior and creates a focal point that’s interestingly off-centre.

Organic and Free Flowing

Here, this beautiful kitchen uses a large curving arch that sweeps the length of the breakfast counter, connecting the living and dining areas with the kitchen. It also frames the garden view beautifully.

A Symphony in Brick

This open kitchen is separated from the living space by a series of graceful brick arches in an industrial-style partition wall. To the other side, more sweeping arches frame views into the rest of this lovely, warm home.

Shallow Archway

The shallow arch that delineates the open kitchen space from the dining is all about subtle sophistication. Simple and elegant, the archway frames a modular kitchen done up in tones of warm wood.

Elegance in White Arch

Looking out from this all-white neat-as-a-pin kitchen, an arched open doorway frames and creates a beautiful transition to the dining area beyond.

Framed

This captivating arch entirely steals the show. It beautifully frames an outdoor view that’s to die for, in this contemporary-styled, kitchen-dining space.

Interior Elements

This classically styled kitchen uses arches as a design element above the cooktop and on the sides of the island countertop. Arches are also quite commonly used in the panels of kitchen cabinets.
