LAMINATE flooring is a neat and economical option that is easy to install in your home.
But how do you clean it and protect it from damage? Here’s everything you need to know.
How to clean laminate floors
Cleaning your laminate floors may not be high on your priority list right now, but it is important to take care of it as dirt on the surface can cause scratches to appear.
They can also get sticky after cleaning if you don’t approach the job properly.
But luckily, we have some great cleaning tips to share with you to bring your laminate floor back to shine.
Vacuum cleaner or dust
You should start by vacuuming or dusting, and make sure not to use a damp mop as this can spread sand on the floor, according to The Spruce website.
If you choose to use a vacuum, use one that has a setting for hard floors, as models with rolling brushes can damage laminate floors if used over time.
Choose a cleaning solution
Now is the time to choose a cleaning solution. You can either use a commercial floor cleaner and follow its instructions, or create your own cleaning mixture.
A blend you could try is made up of:
- 2 cups distilled white vinegar
- 2 cups lukewarm water
- 5-10 drops of an essential oil, this could be: orange, lemon, lemon eucalyptus etc.
Put this in a bottle with a spray bottle and apply it on the affected areas.
Wash the floors
Swelling can easily occur when water seeps between your laminate panels, so try to keep the amount of water you use to a minimum during the cleaning process, and also be frugal with your spray usage.
Make sure the mop is wrung out before use and only slightly damp.
You don’t want any excess water left after cleaning, and the surface should be dry within a minute or two after you’re done.
Then all you need to do is get an absorbent cloth or microfiber mop head and buff the surface dry.
Rub the area in a circular motion until each section is complete.
How to protect laminate floors from damage
So now that you have it sparkling clean again, how do you make sure it’s protected from damage?
The first thing to do is to consider getting entrance mats and not wearing shoes in the house.
Make sure that any spills that occur are wiped up in a timely manner so that they cannot seep into the flooring.
You can also make sure the furniture in your home has floor pads to prevent it from scratching the surface.
Also be aware that over time the laminate can be damaged by direct sunlight, so close the blinds during periods of intense sunshine and when you are away.
