Text description provided by the architects. Jiangmen SMOORE Industrial Park is located in Jianghai District, Jiangmen City, Guangdong Province, adjacent to Xijiang, and the Pearl River Delta Ring Highway and Xijiang Bridge are visible far away. With the L-shaped layout, the site covers an area of 16,429 square meters that the developer leases, which is part of the factory cluster area that connects many factories. The park consists of an administration building, two production factories, a processing factory and a square in the middle of the park, with a total building construction area of 16,300 square meters. As the development and transformation of the industrial pattern in the Greater Bay Area, Jiangmen launched the Urban Renewal Policy to promote the transformation and upgrading of old industrial facilities to attract more emerging industries to the area.
In this project, much more modern use spaces are placed in the administrative building. The first floor is defined as the staff canteen while different functional spaces are implemented on the second and third floors. This includes elements such as the open-plan workplace, directors’ offices, meeting and training room, reception area, etc. The main entrance to the building was moved from the north side to the south side which faces the square. The original double-divided staircase has been dismantled and opened up to a double-height foyer, then the reception gives way to the front space to rebuild a lighter steel staircase with a triangular layout. Orange fc paint is used on its surface to reinforce the dynamic allocations of space.
To solve interior daylighting, the frame structure is filled with transparent window units and all exterior wall enclosure components are removed except for the gable wall of the building. The protrusion of the window units is presented with a regular inclination and extension, the scale is also more strictly controlled to build the basic order of the facade. In addition, the protrusion makes the whole facade get a certain thickness of space, it can be used to place furniture or potted plants. What’s more, it provides the user with free imagination and plays a good use. At the same time, the showcase continues to extend inwards, either as a supervisor’s office or transformed into a public leisure space, emphasizing the continuity of the interior and exterior layout of the building.
Based on the usable area is not diminished, the overhang of the second and third floors is reserved when selecting the scheme, which is in the north of the building. The translucent PC board is applied to the facade, combined with the change of orientation that creates the transverse extension of the facade relationship and enriches the order of the facade, it also cuts the view of the toilets and the electromechanical wells of the outside.
Before the renovation, the use of the central square was negative, only used for the stacking of raw materials and goods. This reconstruction actively reorganized the interior and exterior of the site and the dynamic and static areas. The open space in the middle is delimited by the pedestrian path in front of the entrance hall, and a badminton court and a basketball court are laid out on either side. The planting pond and leisure benches are combined to provide outdoor activity places for employees.
The east of the site is close to the main entrance to the park, with a green car park arranged to meet the parking needs of internal or external visitors. The northernmost site has a more private character and is defined as a bicycle parking lot for staff. In the design of the layout, the geometric patterns on the ground are used to distinguish and guide the circulation lines of pedestrians and vehicles, delimiting different functional blocks.
The first row of the factory facing the square should be equipped with a large equipment storage space and a mechanical loading space. The corrugated aluminum plate and the stretched aluminum mesh are applied to the elevations like the skin, which plays an effective protective role and also reveals the functional attribution of the building. The facade enters into conversation with the administrative building by inclination and dislocation of the island, forming an intention of stacking boxes. The full-height glass directly reveals the large equipment behind it, not only to reflect the relationship between the solid and the void, but also to produce a strong association with the attributes of the industrial park.
The other large-scale facades of the factory remain in the original window position, with a steel plate and a stretching lattice creating the regularity of the form. The main pedestrian entrance is made up of the gatehouse, fire control room and mailroom. The overhead roof above both plays the protective function and also unifies the three simple volumes into a whole image of the entrance. In addition, the “rough” texture of the grooved concrete slab gives an industrial tone to the park as soon as you enter it. The SMOORE Jiangmen Industrial Park Renovation Project has nothing to do with the protection or reuse of industrial heritage. It is an insignificant of the old factories that have emerged in the process of industrialization in the past.
Nowadays, with the development of urban industry and the rise of multinational companies, the reconstruction of urban space is urgently needed. We respond to this rapidly changing trend by explicitly expressing the semantics of industrial buildings so that the park can permanently co-exist with the surrounding industrial city style awaiting the order of renovation.
